Great Cat Crisis in America
The appeal of the magnificent, great cats is alluring and spell binding to most people. Man has had an affinity with these wonderful and mystifying creatures for thousands of years in most cultures. Images of lions, tigers and cougars have always represented royalty, courage, strength, and dignity as they have been respected, feared and admired. No wonder in today's generation of materialism in this country that wanting to own one of these magnificent animals has become an all too easy reality.

Tigers Under Siege
Soon, the only tigers we see may be in pictures. Fewer than 8000 of the cats remain in the wild today - a loss of more than 90,000 in the last century. Some types are particularly rare, such as the Sumatran tiger, with only about 500 in the wild and 250 in zoos. Who is to blame?

Captive Cats in Cages
One of the most common comments we hear from concerned animal lovers is that it is terrible that these animals have to spend the rest of their lives in cages. We certainly understand how they could feel like they do without knowing the complete facts, but fortunately for the cats, it is not like this at all. We do agree that it is tragic for a great cat captured from the wild to then have to spend the rest of its life in a cage. However, it is not the same thing for a cat born in captivity.
